Important Changes to Nalanda West Activities

Dear Friends of Nalanda West,

In light of current health concerns regarding COVID-19, we have decided to extend the closure of Nalanda West for through April to all non-essential staff/volunteers, Nalandabodhi members, and the wider local community.

As you may be aware, Governor Jay Inslee announced on March 15th a tightening of the state’s requirements for social gatherings, prohibiting any gatherings of more than 50 people and allowing in a limited fashion gatherings of fewer than 50 people, provided state-mandated public health and social distancing requirements are met. And Federal officials have recommended people avoid gathering in groups of 10 or more.

We are unfortunately not in the position to monitor or guarantee such conditions and therefore must keep the facilities closed for the time being. This includes private use of the Mahabodhi Shrine Room and Vajra Spot for personal or small-group practice.

On March 23rd Governor Inslee required every Washingtonian to stay home unless they need to pursue an essential activity, as well as a ban all gatherings for social, spiritual and recreational purposes.

Buddhist teachings emphasize the preciousness of our human birth and loving kindness, and in times of public health crisis it becomes increasingly important that we protect not only our own health but the health of others—those with whom we are directly connected, as well as those whom we may only encounter in passing. It is a kindness that we as a community remain calm and vigilant about COVID-19 so as not to put anyone at risk, sangha and beyond.
