Values-Based Living: A Discussion with Veterans Administration & Military Buddhist Chaplains

Jan 23, 2021, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Program Description

What values do you live by? Are there tools to help you live more in line with your own values? What is moral injury and who experiences it? What can the work of Buddhist chaplains teach us about working with our own and other’s suffering? What role does the community play in supporting value-based living in relation to the integration of moral injury?

Join us for a lively, in-depth conversation about values-based living with two Buddhist chaplains. Brett Campbell works with active duty airmen focusing on character development and stabilization for military service. Rebecca Morris is a Veterans Administration outpatient mental health chaplain working with veterans, families, and clinicians fostering and bridging compassionate community at-large.

Ben Mikolaj, an Iraq War veteran and COO of Nalandabodhi International will MC the event. The conversation with our chaplains will explore:

  • Their journeys to becoming Buddhist chaplains and why they choose to work in military settings.
  • The life of a Buddhist chaplain: the work they do and the challenges they face.
  • How Buddhism with its message of non-violence manifests in a military setting.
  • The unique challenges facing soldiers, veterans, and their families.
  • What is values-based living?
  • Tools for identifying and clarifying your own values.
  • What is moral injury and how does it impact soldiers, civilians, and our communities?
  • Methods for living your values more deeply and fully.

There will be an opportunity for questions and answers from audience members as well.
