Dr. Charles Johnson, David Guterson & Samar Abulhassan

Join acclaimed local authors Charles Johnson, David Guterson and poet Samar Abulhassan for a day considering the role of Buddhist practice in the creative arts.

Two sessions during the gathering will include readings and contemplations by the authors on the topic of how Buddhist practice informs creative work and how that work in turn informs practice. Participants will also have the chance for writing and Q&A.

All visual artists, writers, poets, dancers and any and all non artists interested in contemplative life are welcome to join in what promises to be a dynamic day on October 3, 2015.

Professor Johnson, a Ph.D. in Philosophy, is the author of 21 books including Taming the Ox: Buddhist Stories, and Reflections on Politics, Race, Culture, and Spiritual Practice (Shambhala Publications). He is a screenwriter, essayist, professional cartoonist, international lecturer, and has received many awards including the 1990 National Book Award and a MacArthur Fellowship (“genius” grant).

David Guterson is an author of novels, stories, poetry, and non-fiction, best known for the novel Snow Falling on Cedars.
Samar Abulhassan earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Colorado State University in 2001. She teaches for Writers in the Schools, a program of Seattle Arts and Lectures, and the Richard Hugo House. She has published three chapbooks, and lives in Seattle.
